The $6 billion-plus Capital Improvement Plan has spent approximately $2 billion to date. More than $740 million of this has been paid to minority and female business enterprise owners for services rendered.
The planned Maynard H. Jackson, Jr. International Terminal will cover more than 1.2 million square feet, large enough to accommodate 13 New World of Coke museums.
Hartsfield-Jackson will introduce an expanded array of well-known products and services. More than 70 new shops, including Bvlgari, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sean John, L’Occitane and Brooks Brothers, will help make Hartsfield-Jackson an exciting shopping destination. Stores began opening in fall 2008.
When complete, the new international terminal will have 12 wide-body aircraft gates capable of handling Boeing’s massive 747.
The fifth runway, which opened on time in May 2006, also came in under-budget. It is estimated to have saved Hartsfield-Jackson’s airline tenants more than $250 million in cost-related delays.
In 2008, Ben DeCosta celebrated 10 years as general manager of Hartsfield-Jackson. Also, Forbes.com ranked Hartsfield-Jackson the No. 1 airport nationally for Wi-Fi connectivity.
Silver Reserve Parking is a new on-airport, members-only parking lot located just minutes from the terminal building on South Terminal Parkway. It offers the convenience of prime, guaranteed parking for those busy travelers constantly on the go. To find out more, click on the Parking page.
More than 150,000 cubic yards of cement will be used to build the Consolidated Rental Car (CONRAC) facility. That’s enough cement to build the Gwinnett Center more than seven times over!
Once operational in November 2009, CONRAC’s Automated People Mover will carry passengers to rental car customer service counters in less than five minutes.
By centralizing all rental car operations adjacent to the Airport, CONRAC will eliminate the need for rental agency shuttle buses and dramatically reduce the number of rental cars on terminal roadways.
In 2008, Hartsfield-Jackson accommodated more than 90 million passengers, making it the world’s busiest airport for the 11th consecutive year.
Restroom upgrades throughout the Airport will save more than 44 million gallons of water a year.
The “Spirit of Atlanta” artwork by muralist Deborah Wian Whitehouse is installed at Hartsfield-Jackson near the escalators coming up to the terminal area. The photomural, featuring children of various backgrounds, was taken at Centennial Olympic Park and represents Atlanta’s diversity and legacy of the 1996 Olympic Games. It still hangs today.
