Airport welcomes Southwest Airlines
By Amy Schneider

Southwest Airlines made its debut in Atlanta in early February, with its planes arriving at the Airport on February 11 and taking off with their first flights of passengers the next day.

On February 13, Hartsfield-Jackson and Southwest held a news conference to celebrate the airline’s entry into the Atlanta market.

Aviation General Manager Louis Miller joined Gary Kelly, Southwest’s chairman, president and CEO — as well as Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, both of the state’s U.S. senators and other dignitaries — in officially launching the Airport’s partnership with Southwest Airlines.

“We are pleased to welcome Southwest Airlines as it begins service at Hartsfield-Jackson,” Miller said. “Competition is beneficial for everyone, and we are confident our customers will embrace the additional choices that Southwest Airlines will offer.”

Kelly spoke about Southwest’s excitement to join the world’s busiest airport and emphasized the airline’s intention to continue working with the community, including a partnership with the Georgia Aquarium and a new LUV Grants for Good program, which will provide $150,000 in grants to Georgia nonprofit organizations.

The event included remarks from Miller, Reed, Deal and Kelly and concluded with a drop of red, yellow and blue balloons from the top of the Atrium.

Southwest Airlines recently acquired AirTran Holdings Inc., the former parent company of AirTran Airways, an existing carrier at Hartsfield-Jackson. AirTran and Southwest both will operate at the Airport until Southwest integrates AirTran into its brand.

Southwest also will launch air cargo service and has added a 26,000-square-foot cargo facility in the Airport’s north cargo complex.

The Southwest Airlines ticket counters are in Terminal North, and flights will operate on Concourse C.
